In 1933, Francesco Illy founded illycaffè, and in 1935, he introduced the Illetta, a groundbreaking espresso machine and preservation method that maintained the quality of coffee under pressure, enabling export. In the 1940s, the first illy cans were exported to Sweden and the Netherlands.
Ernesto, son of Francesco, joined the company in the late 1940s. He started his own illy laboratory to optimize coffee production and shelf life. In the 1950s, illy-caffè expanded and began selling smaller cans of ground coffee for home use before relocating to Via Flavia in 1965.
In 1974, illy introduced servings for espresso in the office or at home and patented a method for digital selection of coffee beans. In the 1990s, the illy Art Collection cups and the new illy logo, designed by James Rosenquist, were introduced, as well as the Premio Brasile for the best coffee producers. Today, illy is globally renowned for excellence and Italian taste, led by Andrea Illy, one of Ernesto's sons.
