Zwartekoffie's journey began in 2013 when Joffrey Vermeule, along with his wife and children, lived in Costa Rica. In Tuis, a small village in the countryside, they connected with coffee farmers in and around the village. These individuals at the bottom of the coffee chain barely earned anything despite their hard work. The 4 pillars of Direct Trade Together with our partner Café Misión, Zwartekoffie then started buying coffee from these farmers and exporting it to the Netherlands. Café Misión, as a social enterprise, began creating jobs in the village of Tuis. By providing work to people in coffee, such as in the fields or at the washing station, they offer perspective to many vulnerable groups in society. You should know that all the profit made from coffee production is directly reinvested in the local population.
